Your doctor has ordered a Lung Ventilation and Perfusion Scan to evaluate your lungs and rule out pulmonary embolism. Please follow these simple instructions, so that we may best serve you.
- Fasting is not required for this exam.
- Report to the Radiology department 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in.
- An I.V. will be placed in your arm for your exam.
- You will inhale a small amount of radioactive gas for the Ventilation portion of your exam. The technologist will give you a set of breathing instructions. You will have the mask over your face for approximately 6 minutes. Images will be acquired during this time to help visualize the air flow to your lungs.
- You will then receive an injection of radioactive material that will help visualize the blood flow to your lungs. You will continue to lie on the scanner with your arms raised above your head for approximately 15 minutes.
- A chest X-Ray is required within 24 hours of this exam. It is preferred that you have this done in our radiology department the same day as your Lung scan.
- You are able to resume normal activities following your exam.
