Midstate Radiology AssociatesAt Midstate Radiology Associates, our commitment to healthcare goes beyond providing award-winning patient care – it’s about connecting with people, sharing our expertise and making a difference. We’re proud to have team members who are passionate about using their skills to improve healthcare access for all.

Recently, Kristin Ranciato, Outpatient Ultrasound Supervisor, and Dr. Zenon Protopapas, Director of Cardiac Imaging, traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to volunteer at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) and Muhimbili University of Health and Science (MUHAS). Their mission was to support medical education and enhance healthcare access by training local radiology residents, students and technologists.

This trip reflects our dedication to serving by advancing healthcare through education, collaboration and compassion.

Empowering Communities Through Education

Kristin and Dr. Protopapas worked closely with local radiology residents, students and technologists to provide hands-on training in ultrasound and diagnostic imaging. These efforts are critical for developing sustainable fellowship programs in specialties like women’s imaging, neuroradiology and interventional radiology.

Yet the challenges they faced were evident. From equipment limitations – such as only one functioning ultrasound machine for 53 students – to outdated medical imaging data storage and disconnected IT infrastructure, our team saw firsthand the barriers to accurate diagnoses and timely care. Financial limitations also prevent patients from seeking care until their conditions have progressed to advanced stages.

Despite these obstacles, the warmth, eagerness and generosity of the local medical community were truly inspiring. The Tanzanian clinicians were excited to learn, collaborate and improve patient care. Their passion reinforced our belief that education and collaboration are powerful tools for positive change.

Before leaving, Kristin and Dr. Protopapas were honored with a farewell celebration hosted by local staff. The gathering included traditional gifts and expressions of cultural appreciation, serving as a powerful reminder of the connections formed through shared purpose. The experience made such an impact that they’re already exploring future opportunities to return!

Our Culture of Giving Back

Supporting volunteerism has always been part of who we are at Midstate Radiology Associates. We’ve proudly encouraged our team members to share their skills and compassion through community outreach efforts. Inspired by this recent trip to Tanzania, we are now expanding our vision to create more opportunities on a global scale.

As a result, we are developing a formal volunteerism policy to support our colleagues who wish to engage in local and international outreach efforts. Moving forward, we’re excited to continue supporting meaningful initiatives, building lasting educational partnerships and developing online resources to make training accessible year-round.
